IMG Junior Golf Tour makes landfall with Club Champion Open at Wyncote Golf Club in Pennsylvania, Oct. 27-28
Virginia's Sam Jung claims Boys 11-14 Division; Connor Sheehan wins Boys 15-18 Division
The IMG Junior Golf Tour’s second Northeast event of the year – the Club Champion Open – drew players from seven different states, Washington D.C. and Ontario, Canada.. With Hurricane Sandy swirling over the Atlantic, the open links design of Wyncote Golf Club leant itself to tough, windy conditions throughout the weekend. The final round of play on Sunday was moved to a shotgun start as a precaution for the storm. However, the weather did not keep Sam Jung of Chantilly, Va. down. The 13-year-old stole the show as he dominated the Boys 11-14 Division by 16 strokes, shooting 75+71=146 (+2).
“Putting was the strong suit for me this weekend,” said Jung on his performance. “For the most part, I hit all of the fairways which allowed me to set up good looks at birdie.”
The Boys 15-18 Division was tightly contested between Connor Sheehan of Quarryville, Pa. and Nick Maff of Bethlehem, Pa. On Saturday, Maff was 10-strokes off the lead before finding his groove and shooting an inspired round of 75 (+3) on Sunday. It was not quite enough, however, as Sheehan, who is only in his second year of playing competitive golf, finished with a 74+84=158 (+14) to fend off Maff (+15) for the one-stroke victory.
Sheehan remarked of his win, “Keeping it out of the fescue and making a couple putts was the key to the win for me.”
The Club Champion Open was the IMG Junior Golf Tour’s first-ever event in the Keystone State. The host course, Wyncote Golf Club, is ranked by Golf Magazine among the top five courses you can play in Pennsylvania. Division winners each received a full-bag fitting from tournament sponsor Club Champion, a full service custom club fitter with a store in Bala Cynwyd, Pa. The top three in each age division also received a driver or iron fitting, and all participants received a certificate for a complimentary engraving of their wedges. The IMG Junior Golf Tour will return to the Northeast with two events to be announced this coming spring.
